Project Description

A project is ongoing in our neighbouring village to Regenerate the Pavilion on Barrow Playing Field and include a Community Shop.

The maintenance of the playing field and buildings is an ongoing  financial liability for the owners, Barrow Parish Council and this project will convert it into a viable financial and community asset.

It will remove a potentially unsafe pavilion and replace it with a new purpose-built accommodation to house, facilities for the playing field and a shop with Post Office, and particularly toilets accessible to all. The shop will be run by the Great Barrow Community Shop Ltd, a Community Benefit Society, where any surplus
finance must be used for social or charitable works within the village.

Maintenance of the facilities of the playing field will consequently be considered within this remit.

The shop will also be operated mainly by volunteers and 35 residents have already come forward; but we also expect to give work experience to youngsters and
training to young adults in retailing.

The loss of the shop has already been felt by many villagers, including the elderly, the residents of Barrowmore home, young mums, and also everyone senses the lack of a centre, a conversation and meeting place, one for notices, news etc.  Therefore, the shop with post office, mini café, toilets is our plan to meet this need of a
Hub.

The playing field facilities, football, children’s playground etc will become more used with the hub and accessible toilet facilities.

The project manager for the work contacted the Foundation outlining the grant funding that was being sought, and to request any possible leverage funding that we might be able to provide.

We were very pleased to hear that the funding bid was successful in February 2019, and were happy to be able to contribute towards this valuable COMMUNITY facility!
